Fires: Planes, helicopters and drones increase in the fight against the flames
At REAS new technologies to identify and extinguish fires

The number of planes, helicopters and even drones used in Italy to fight forest fires is increasing. In fact, this summer the firefighting campaign will be able to count on 34 aircraft, coordinated by the Unified Air Operations Center (COAU) of the Civil Protection Department. This fleet will consist of fourteen “Canadair CL-415”, two “AT-802 Fire Boss” amphibious aircraft, five “S-64 Skycrane” helicopters and thirteen other helicopters of various models. In summer 2022, the COAU carried out 1,102 firefighting missions, with a total of 5,849 flight hours for the launch of more than 176 million liters of extinguishant. Planes and helicopters are also joined by drones, increasingly used by the Carabinieri Forestry, the Fire Brigade and also by the regional Civil Protection organizations to control the territory, identify the fires early and perhaps catch any arsonists in the act. The latest technological innovations on the front of the use of aerial vehicles in the fight against forest fires will be among the topics at the center of REAS 2023, the twenty-second edition of the great international exhibition on emergencies, civil protection, first aid and fire prevention, which will take place from 6 to 8 October at the Montichiari Exhibition Center (Brescia).

During REAS 2023, two brand new “made in Italy” fixed-wing and solar-powered drones will be presented for the first time, capable of flying during the day for many hours even over long distances: we are talking about the “FireHound Zero LTE“, a drone equipped a sophisticated infrared sensor for identifying fires and capable of transmitting the precise coordinates of even a small bonfire, and the “Fire Responder”, a vertical take-off and landing drone capable of carrying six kilograms of extinguishing material to be dropped directly on the flames. Also as part of the fair, the new aeronautical map “Air Rescue Network Aeronautical Chart” will also be distributed, which will present for the first time the scenario of the entire Italian network of over 1,500 airports, airfields, airfields and heliports that can be used as logistic bases for civil protection operations, fire surveillance and air rescue. The exhibition program also includes a round table on the 2023 summer firefighting campaign, organized by the magazine “La Protezione Civile Italiana”, a conference on “Drones in firefighting missions”, promoted by the Roma Drone Conference, and a training workshop for volunteers on helicopter operation techniques, organized by Aifos Civil Protection and SicurScuola.

REAS is organized by the Montichiari Exhibition Center in partnership with Hannover Fairs International GmbH and with Interschutz, the world’s leading specialized trade fair which takes place every four years in Hannover (Germany). About three months after the opening, reservations for the exhibition area are now almost sold out. This confirms the growing trend of the 2022 edition, which saw the presence of over 240 companies, organizations and associations from Italy and 19 other countries. All the latest technological innovations in the sector will be exhibited in the pavilions of the Exhibition Centre, such as new products and equipment for first aid operators, special emergency and fire-fighting vehicles, electronic systems and drones for interventions in the event of natural disasters and also aids for people with disabilities. At the same time, an extensive program of conferences and seminars is planned for the three days of the show, which will offer visitors an important opportunity for training and professional updating. In fact, numerous conferences, round tables, demonstration sessions, thematic corners and contests are already being prepared, which will involve prominent speakers and representatives of institutions, bodies, state bodies and associations. Admission is free and open to all, subject to online registration.

At REAS 2023 a new area dedicated to occupational safety

REAS is divided into macro exhibition areas that cover all areas of emergency management: fire prevention, civil protection, first aid and aids for people with disabilities. Over the course of over twenty years of history, the International Emergency Exhibition has been able to give a voice to companies that put work, experience and the ability to innovate at the service of the emergency sector.

The technological synergy is the basis of one of the novelties of REAS 2023. On the occasion of the edition scheduled from 6 to 8 October, in fact, the three sectors that have always been the strength of REAS are joined by the one dedicated to occupational safety. Many innovations intended for the emergency sector also find application in the field of occupational safety and this is why, in certain processes, the production processes are carried out in a synergistic way.

REAS will therefore offer companies that have been exhibiting products for the emergency sector at the fair for some time the opportunity to also offer their own range relating to occupational safety. One more opportunity for companies and visitors.

REAS 2023: a comparison between the institutions that gives voice to the Italian emergency management system

An exhibition showcase for the emergency sector, but also a moment of dialogue in which institutions can discuss the key issues of the moment and disseminate their initiatives to the community. This is the identity of REAS, the international exhibition dedicated to civil protection, fire prevention and first aid scheduled from 6 to 8 October at Centro Fiera Montichiari.

On the occasion of the twenty-second edition, REAS increases the presence of institutional delegations from the Italian regions. The fair is seen as a useful moment to present initiatives, projects and specific activities programmed at an institutional level. The result is an all-round comparison on the main challenges involving civil protection in prevention, monitoring and intervention activities on the territory. Furthermore, such an articulated institutional representation makes REAS an essential fair for understanding the specific characteristics of the Italian emergency management system. This is confirmed by the presence at the fair of delegations from abroad, in particular from Germany, by virtue of the partnership between Centro Fiera Montichiari and Hannover Fairs International GmbH which links REAS to INTERSCHUTZ, the most important event in the world dedicated to safety. In addition to the presence of delegations from the vfdb, the German fire prevention association, and the DFV, the German firefighters association, the return to the fair of THW – Bundesanstalt Technisches Hilfswerk, the rescue and emergency management of the German Federal Government. After a year’s break due to the need to supervise the territory of origin for some extraordinary interventions, THW operators and volunteers will be back at REAS to illustrate, as per tradition, their operating models and exhibit some special vehicles used in the protocols operational.

REAS, therefore, brings to the fair the technologies and services dedicated to civil protection, first aid and fire prevention, promoting the comparison between all the realities that, at the different operational levels, take part in the Italian emergency management system. One of the most awaited events of the 2023 edition of REAS responds to this approach: the AIB Round Table dedicated to forest fire prevention issues. The initiative promoted as every year by the magazine “La Protezione Civile Italiana”, will give the representatives of the various Italian regions, operators and experts in the sector the opportunity to take stock of the season of interventions and the needs related to forest firefighting. The goal is to share data, analyzes and specific knowledge of the individual territories, to improve control and intervention strategies.

From 6 to 8 October, therefore, REAS will give a voice to those who, as operators and volunteers, dedicate their commitment and energy to emergency management. Another of the initiatives that go in this direction is the second edition of the “Photo contest REAS“, promoted by REAS in collaboration with the Photogek Fenaroli atelier. The photographic contest is aimed at volunteers in the emergency sector, called to tell their operational experience through photography. The shots will be able to portray the activities carried out in the field and the services provided in emergency contexts but also the daily activity that is carried out within an association or group active in the area. The theme of the 2023 edition is “Emergency management: the value of teamwork”.

REAS 2023 to sell out: the fire-fighting sector is growing

The 2023 edition of REAS, the International Exhibition for Rescue, Fire Fighting, Disaster Relief and Security, is approaching which, from 6 to 8 October, will bring together all the main players in the world linked to emergency management at Centro Fiera Montichiari. An appointment now in its twenty-second edition which will involve bodies, government bodies, associations and voluntary groups, with the presence at the fair of the most important manufacturing and commercial companies dealing with fire prevention, civil protection and first aid.

In terms of exhibition space, next October’s event is about to sell out. The excellent results of the 2022 edition favored the reconfirmation of all the main companies from last year, to which was added a significant growth in the fire-fighting sector. This is a constant in recent years: the Montichiari show has once again become a point of reference for the major international players in the sector who participate with the aim of presiding over the Italian market. The event will give the opportunity to present new models and equipment, with dedicated test areas and display of special vehicles also in the external area.

Internationalization is one of the strategic objectives that REAS has pursued over the years, thanks above all to the partnership with INTERSCHUTZ of Fiera Hannover which favors the presence of buyers and delegations from abroad at the fair, with concrete repercussions for the territory.

REAS 2023 will also focus on technologies at the service of civil protection and first aid, a sector in which aids and means intended for people with disabilities will play a significant role. A new macro-area, on the other hand, will be dedicated to occupational safety. The aim is to reward the activity of the numerous emergency companies that develop products and devices that are also used for safety in the workplace.

In recent weeks, the program of conferences and seminars is being completed, which will focus on content and key topics for civil protection and fire prevention. REAS will be, as per consolidated tradition, an opportunity to take stock of forest fire prevention which, every year, requires increasingly punctual management, due not only to the peculiarities of the Italian territory which expose wooded areas to a high risk but also to the negative consequences of increasing drought and average temperatures. In addition to being a meeting point between the institutions involved in emergency management, REAS will offer an overview of the new technologies available to operators starting, for example, with the use of drones not only in rescue operations but also in monitoring and prevention. For operators and volunteers who participate in REAS every year, visiting the fair means investing in their own training. Increasing one’s technical background and perfecting operational and regulatory knowledge is essential for those who are part of groups, associations and institutions that take part in the national emergency management protocol. REAS will offer a program of conferences, demonstration sessions, round tables, thematic corners and contests that focus on training.

REAS 2022: over 25,000 visitors (+10%) for a record edition

An edition, capable of calling over 25,000 volunteers and emergency operators once again to Montichiari, with an increasingly complete exposition for fire protection, civil protection and first aid. REAS 2022 concludes with record figures, confirming its increasingly international profile as an exhibition and its ability to give a voice to the Italian Emergency Management System. A concept reiterated by Italian Civil Protection Department Head Fabrizio Curcio at the ribbon cutting ceremony and the conference dedicated to the theme “Medevac and Disevac in international emergencies: state of the art and future perspectives”, at which, among others, participated the general Consul of Ukraine in Milan Andril Kartysh.

“REAS 2022 concluded in the best manner possible, applauded by exhibitors and visitors”, declares Gianantonio Rosa, President of Centro Fiera Montichiari. “The fair is the result of enormous group work that rewards the passion of those who work every day in the care of the territory and the safety of our communities. I wish to thank, in particular, the Authorities, the Institutions and the Government Bodies that each year exhibit their activities at REAS, establishing a direct connection with volunteers, operators and citizens”.

REAS is an occasion for meeting and exchange for emergency volunteers and, at the same time, a complete exhibition thanks to a high-level showcase offer. “REAS 2022 has registered a strong increase in exposition space”, explains Ezio Zorzi, Director of Centro Fiera Montichiari. “In particular we have registered considerable growth in fire protection companies with the presence of leading sector players. REAS is, to all intents and purposes, a reference fair, not only for the Italian market but for all of Southern Europe.”

Each edition of REAS is enriched with a programme of conferences, workshops and seminars, along with special events that allow visitors to appreciate close up the intervention protocols and the new technology available to those who work in rescue. This is the case with the “Zamberletti” Trophy promoted by Prociv Italy and dedicated to the memory of Giuseppe Zamberletti, founder of the Civil Protection Department under the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, the “Driver of the year Trophy” and the “Rescue Dog Trophy”. In addition, REAS 2022 saw the debut of the “REAS Photo Contest”, a competition created to tell stories about the spirit of those who work in emergency contexts through photography and where the shot taken by Swen Baldinger, volunteer fire fighter from Bellinzona, in Switzerland during a forest fire protection operation, excelled.

With over 240 exhibitors, from Italy and 19 other countries, REAS confirms itself as an increasingly international exhibition, thanks to the partnership with INTERSCHUTZ Hannover, the most important global event dedicated to the emergency sector.
“This partnership with REAS and with Centro Fiera Montichiari is very important and we are highly impressed by the results and the work carried out to organize this edition of the fair”, declares Bernd Heinold, Senior Project Director INTERSCHUTZ – Deutsche Messe AG. “Apart from the significant visitor figures, the spirit of this fair, the optimism and the emotion that are felt in its halls, are important. Topical issues such as climate change and the emergency in Ukraine need the will to create networks and cooperation on an international level. An event like REAS offers an opportunity to compare and cooperate beyond national borders.”

“Over the last ten years since our partnership started, we have succeeded in positioning REAS at an international level”, highlights Andreas Züge, Managing Director of Hannover Fairs International. “The fair is now also better known abroad and has developed from an event for volunteers to an exhibition open also to professionals and companies. REAS continues to promote cooperation between different countries, also in terms of projects, activities and joint training exercises.”

“REAS offers an excellent opportunity to learn about the Civil Protection system of our Partner Country Italy”, explains Karl-Heinz Banse, President of the German Association of Firefighters (DFV). “Some weeks ago, Italian fire-fighting aircraft contributed significantly to the extinguishing of a forest fire of notable size in Germany. Technological transfer and international synergies are decisive factors for operating in emergency contexts.”

“It is indispensable to work together on a European scale to face current and future challenges”, declares Dirk Aschenbrenner, President of the German Association for the Promotion of Fire Protection (vfdb). “REAS was an excellent opportunity for interaction, dialogue and sharing our specific skills.”

Following a distinguished edition in terms of growing figures, REAS is looking optimistically forward to the 2023 edition, for which preparations will begin already in the coming days. The dates set for the International Emergency Exhibition at Centro Fiera Montichiari are from October 6th to 8th, 2023.

Ukraine: 232 patients flown to Italy in 7 months
At REAS the point on the health support of the Civil Protection

At REAS a workshop on the healthcare figure in industrial rescue

Thanks to the work of IERESP, Rescue Press and the non-conditioning contribution of Ferno Italia from 9.30 on Saturday 8 October the figure of the industrial rescuer will be at the center of a workshop that will identify its limits and perspectives.

Rescue in an industrial environment, both urban and extra-urban, certainly constitutes a very complex scenario for the team of rescuers arriving on site. Among the various conceivable accident scenarios, rescue in suspected pollution or confined environments (taking into account the possible limitations due to the characteristics of these environments and access / exit difficulties), can involve long approach times to the patient, often incompatible with the survival of the injured person or which may affect their full recovery without sequelae. For this reason, IERESP (European Association of Industrial and Emergency Response Specialist) and Rescue Press, in collaboration with Ferno Italia, organize this theoretical-practical workshop on the evaluation of the role of the health figure in Industrial Rescue teams.

Speakers:

Chairman: Adriano Paolo Bacchetta – IERESP President

Speakers:
Mauro Tocci: contract nurse at the University of Perugia
Debora Santini: critical area nurse at the Meyer Hospital in Florence
Alberto Adduci: Resuscitator Anesthetist and President of NAEMT Italy
Alberto Graziani: Doctor and consultant for medicine in the industrial field

9.30 / 10.30: theoretical part with examination of the role and importance of the nursing figure in the context of Industrial Rescue teams.

10.30 / 13.30: practical part with access to the structure at pavilion 5 of the Prevent Srl stand, where it will be possible for learners to view the equipment and carry out a harness test. Furthermore, following the international guidelines on safety in rope rescue (IRATA) and on medical rescue (PHTLS standard), some intervention simulations typical of Industrial Rescue will be performed by Prevent Srl personnel. During the activities, the individual phases will be explained and the participants will be able to ask specific questions regarding the activities in progress.

Sanctification processes for ambulances: the Rescue Press workshop at REAS

In the occasion of REAS 2022 Rescue Press organizes an in-person workshop to understand the best sanitation methods for ambulances, maxi-emergency systems and special rescue vehicles. In double session, the workshop is organized together with Focaccia Group which will present the new FG MICRO hydrogen peroxide sanitization system.

The pandemic has left us many good practices to make our ambulances safer. But – unfortunately – the sanitization we have used up to now has had the defect of making the surfaces of the vehicles more and more corroded, and less and less resistant. This is why the first step to be placed in order to continue to have safe and clean ambulances is to identify the best sanitation procedures, at reasonable costs, and which can be carried out in a short time.

For this reason Rescue Press – together with the Italian society of territorial nurses and the contribution of Focaccia Group, will carry out a workshop to explain the best and main recommendations from a functional and operational point of view to carry out complete sanitization and cleaning of the vehicles.

WHERE: IN REAS, MONTICHIARI (BS) FROM 7 TO 9 OCTOBER 2022
FRIDAY 7 OCTOBER / SCALVINI ROOM AT 10.30
SATURDAY 8 OCTOBER / THREE ROOM AT 2.30 pm

At the end of the workshop Focaccia Group will carry out practical training to evaluate the most suitable sanitation systems based on new hydrogen peroxide atomization technologies, certified according to the 17272: 2020 regulation.

THE TOPICS OF THE WORKSHOP
  • Sanitation: review of systems and literature on the best cleaning processes that can be used today
  • The Regulation: explanation of the regulation 17272: 2020 on cleaning surfaces to reduce viruses and bacteria by 99.99%
  • Timing and organization: between sanitization and cleaning, which path to follow to speed up the times while guaranteeing maximum safety
  • Implementation: deepening of the technologies to sanitize a vehicle with hydrogen peroxide in a safe way

The workshop with free access. Participants will be given a special promotion created exclusively for the REAS 2022 fair and dedicated to all Italian rescue associations.
