Drones in firefighting missions: the use of new unmanned aircraft to fight forest fires presented at REAS

During the next edition of REAS, the third edition of the national conference dedicated to the use of drones in emergencies will take place. This year the meeting will concern the use of unmanned aircraft for the identification, monitoring and extinguishing of forest fires, which flare up throughout Italy especially in summer. The dozens of planes and helicopters coordinated by the Civil Protection Department, in the summer firefighting campaigns are increasingly joined by multirotor and fixed-wing drones, used by the Forest Carabinieri, the Fire Brigade and also by the regional Civil Protection organizations to control the territory , detect the flames early and perhaps catch any arsonists in the act.

On the occasion of the conference, two brand new “made in Italy” fixed-wing and solar-powered drones, capable of flying during the day for many hours in a row even over long distances, will be presented: the “FireHound Zero LTE”, a drone equipped with a sophisticated infrared sensor to identify fires and capable of transmitting the precise coordinates of even a small bonfire, and the “Fire Responder”, a vertical take-off and landing drone capable of carrying six kilograms of extinguishing material to be dropped directly on the flames. Both of these drones were developed by Vector Robotics company, in collaboration with NPC Spacemind. More information: www.vector-robotics.space.

At the conference, speeches are also expected from representatives of public bodies, the armed forces and state bodies involved in the fight against fires, also with the use of drones. The organization is managed by the Roman company Mediarkè, in collaboration with the two reference professional events of the drone sector in Italy, Rome Drone Conference and Sea Drone Tech Summit.

Civil Protection and Air Rescue: the new national map “Air Rescue Network Aeronautical Chart” presented at REAS

The conference “Civil Protection and Air Rescue” will present the characteristics and geographical distribution of the network of 1,500 public and private aeronautical infrastructures (airports, airfields/heli/hydrosurfaces and airfields) present in Italy: in practice, one aeronautical landing place for every five municipalities , thirteen for each province, an average territorial coverage of one landing place every 150 sq km.

During the conference, the unpublished “Air Rescue Network Aeronautical Chart” map will be distributed free of charge, representative of this national network, which Legislative Decree 120/2021 plans to enhance with petrol stations, hangars, workshops, modernization of take-off runways specifically for the contrast of forest fires and support for the national Civil Protection service.

This map is a unique publication, an exceptional and unprecedented knowledge tool for pilots, professionals, operators and public administrations which, in this geographical and regulatory context, will be called upon to carry out support interventions and preventive strategic planning actions.

“Air Rescue Network Aeronautical Chart” is created and published by Avioportolano, a leading company in Italy in the production of AIS (Aeronautical Information Service) certified cartography for air navigation, in joint venture with EIL Systems, an Italian company that produces patented light tower systems , made on design and with aeronautical construction technology. Portable field and emergency lighting: at REAS the presentation of the “Towerlux-Series” lighting towers for scenarios of maximum operational criticality

Aeronautical technology and experimentation applied to field and emergency portable lighting are the factors that led the Italian company EIL Systems to create the first inflatable light tower equipped with the latest generation integrated batteries, patented all over the world.

The “Towerlux-Series®” systems, of which the integrated battery solution constitutes the most advanced point of development, are the result of experiences developed in the field in close and continuous collaboration with national and international civil and military entities operating in the fields of civil protection, environmental safety and rescue in scenarios of maximum criticality. These systems have in fact been used in numerous emergency operations, such as those following the earthquake in Amatrice, the avalanche in Rigopiano and the railway accident in Lac-Mégantic.

From feedback from field experience to new inventions, the conference intends to focus – with the direct testimony of the protagonists – on the path and the technological solutions adopted, which allow EIL Systems to present for the first time at REAS 2023 a system of field lighting for large areas, unique in the world for lightness, portability, speed of installation, autonomy, visual comfort and power of light. Fires: Planes, helicopters and drones increase in the fight against the flames
At REAS new technologies to identify and extinguish fires

The number of planes, helicopters and even drones used in Italy to fight forest fires is increasing. In fact, this summer the firefighting campaign will be able to count on 34 aircraft, coordinated by the Unified Air Operations Center (COAU) of the Civil Protection Department. This fleet will consist of fourteen “Canadair CL-415”, two “AT-802 Fire Boss” amphibious aircraft, five “S-64 Skycrane” helicopters and thirteen other helicopters of various models. In summer 2022, the COAU carried out 1,102 firefighting missions, with a total of 5,849 flight hours for the launch of more than 176 million liters of extinguishant. Planes and helicopters are also joined by drones, increasingly used by the Carabinieri Forestry, the Fire Brigade and also by the regional Civil Protection organizations to control the territory, identify the fires early and perhaps catch any arsonists in the act. The latest technological innovations on the front of the use of aerial vehicles in the fight against forest fires will be among the topics at the center of REAS 2023, the twenty-second edition of the great international exhibition on emergencies, civil protection, first aid and fire prevention, which will take place from 6 to 8 October at the Montichiari Exhibition Center (Brescia).

During REAS 2023, two brand new “made in Italy” fixed-wing and solar-powered drones will be presented for the first time, capable of flying during the day for many hours even over long distances: we are talking about the “FireHound Zero LTE“, a drone equipped a sophisticated infrared sensor for identifying fires and capable of transmitting the precise coordinates of even a small bonfire, and the “Fire Responder”, a vertical take-off and landing drone capable of carrying six kilograms of extinguishing material to be dropped directly on the flames. Also as part of the fair, the new aeronautical map “Air Rescue Network Aeronautical Chart” will also be distributed, which will present for the first time the scenario of the entire Italian network of over 1,500 airports, airfields, airfields and heliports that can be used as logistic bases for civil protection operations, fire surveillance and air rescue. The exhibition program also includes a round table on the 2023 summer firefighting campaign, organized by the magazine “La Protezione Civile Italiana”, a conference on “Drones in firefighting missions”, promoted by the Roma Drone Conference, and a training workshop for volunteers on helicopter operation techniques, organized by Aifos Civil Protection and SicurScuola.

REAS is organized by the Montichiari Exhibition Center in partnership with Hannover Fairs International GmbH and with Interschutz, the world’s leading specialized trade fair which takes place every four years in Hannover (Germany). About three months after the opening, reservations for the exhibition area are now almost sold out. This confirms the growing trend of the 2022 edition, which saw the presence of over 240 companies, organizations and associations from Italy and 19 other countries. All the latest technological innovations in the sector will be exhibited in the pavilions of the Exhibition Centre, such as new products and equipment for first aid operators, special emergency and fire-fighting vehicles, electronic systems and drones for interventions in the event of natural disasters and also aids for people with disabilities. At the same time, an extensive program of conferences and seminars is planned for the three days of the show, which will offer visitors an important opportunity for training and professional updating. In fact, numerous conferences, round tables, demonstration sessions, thematic corners and contests are already being prepared, which will involve prominent speakers and representatives of institutions, bodies, state bodies and associations. Admission is free and open to all, subject to online registration.
